Kapiʻolani Community College and the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary are collaborating together to offer a specialized Court Interpreter training program. There will be 6 online synchronous sessions with 3 in-person sessions to evaluate the studentʻs understanding of the content and demonstration of their interpreting skills. There is a significant shortage of Court Interpreters statewide. This course prepares learners to interpret in legal and court settings. Through a reciprocity agreement with the Judiciary, students who complete this course my become a Hawaiʻi State Judiciary Tier 1 Court Interpreter, if they additionally pass the Judiciary’s English and ethics test.

Prerequisite:

  • Possess the ability to speak both English and non-English language fluently
  • Have access to a more recent computer and reliable Internet connection to attend weekly live online sessions via Zoom.
  • Should NOT have already attended and received completion of the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary Basic Orientation Workshop for Court Interpreters (BOW).

Course Dates: June 15 – July 31, 2024

Location: Completely online. Live online sessions will be held on Wednesdays, 5:30 – 6:45pm. There are three in-person sessions held at Kapiʻolani Community College on June 15, July 13 and July 20.
